Unregister from the Peppol network

Unregister your organisation from Peppol: when, what the consequences are, and how it works.

Want to stop receiving e-invoices via Peppol, or fully unregister your organisation from the network? You can manage this yourself through the platform. Below you can read when unregistering makes sense, how to do it, and what the consequences are.

When to unregister?

There are several situations in which you might want to adjust your Peppol registration:

  • Disable receiving: you want to temporarily or permanently stop receiving invoices via Peppol, but continue sending.
  • Full deregistration: you want to completely remove your organisation from the Peppol network, for example when closing your business or switching to a different Service Provider.
  • Remove an identifier: you want to remove a specific identifier (e.g. VAT number) from Peppol while keeping other identifiers active.
Disable receiving per identifier

You can disable receiving documents via Peppol per identifier:

  1. Log in to platform.econnect.eu.
  2. Go to Organisations and select your organisation.
  3. Click on Details.
  4. Find the identifier for which you want to disable receiving.
  5. Toggle Receiving to off.

From that point on, no new e-invoices will be delivered via Peppol on that identifier. Invoices that were previously received remain available in your archive.

Tip: if you turn off receiving but leave sending enabled, you can still send invoices via Peppol. Only receiving stops.

Full deregistration from Peppol

Want to completely remove your organisation from the Peppol network? Then turn off both sending and receiving for all identifiers. Your organisation will no longer be discoverable on the network and will not be able to send or receive documents via Peppol.

Important: if you fully deregister, suppliers and customers can no longer reach you via Peppol. Invoices will then fall back to email or postal mail. Make sure your trading partners are aware of this.

Cancel your account

If you want to end not only your Peppol registration but also your full eConnect account, please contact support. The support team will guide you through the cancellation process and ensure that your existing documents remain available in accordance with retention requirements. Existing documents remain available in line with the Dutch retention obligation: seven years for regular documents, ten years for documents relating to real estate.

Switching to a different Service Provider

A Peppol identifier can only be registered with one Service Provider (Access Point) at a time. Want to switch to a different provider (for example Exact Online)? Then a migration procedure is required.

A Peppol participant ID can be transferred to another provider via a migration code — the ID does not need to be re-created from scratch. Two conditions apply: you must authorise eConnect in writing/legally to carry out the transfer, and you must have no outstanding financial obligations (unpaid invoices) with eConnect.

To start the process of disconnecting, use the cancellation/termination form on support.econnect.eu — not via a support request. After submitting the cancellation, you receive a migration code. Pass that code to the new provider, who will use it to re-register the ID.

During the transition you remain reachable on the network, so suppliers can continue sending invoices. Are you a developer? Then the same procedure is available via the prepareToMigrate API endpoint (see Migration via the API).

When don't you need a migration key?

A migration key is only relevant if eConnect holds an existing Peppol receiving registration that needs to be transferred. If your organisation cannot receive e-invoices via eConnect (no receiving registration or SMP claim for receiving), there is nothing to transfer and you do not need a migration key. In that case, register your organisation directly with the new provider for receiving, for example the AFAS Peppol Access Point.

Note: sending-only, or "we don't actively receive", is not the same as "no receiving registration" as long as eConnect still holds the SMP claim. In that case your identifier remains claimed (see below), and the migration code route is still needed if you want to release the claim.

Where do you generate the migration key?

There is no separate "generate migration key" button outside the cancellation process (search variants: no option to generate migration key, migration key button not visible, migration key first then cancel, where do I generate the migration key). You request the key within the existing self-service flow: My environment > Cancel account > per organisation Migrate (not Stop immediately). Request the key before you use Stop immediately at eConnect or complete the termination, and make sure your new provider is ready.

New provider does not support Peppol migration

Some new applications or Service Providers do not offer migration key intake -- they do not take over a migration code from eConnect. In that case Migrate is not possible and the correct self-service route is: My environment > Cancel account > Stop immediately (not Migrate). First check that there are no outstanding eConnect invoices and top up first in case of a negative balance. After "Stop immediately" your Peppol registration is withdrawn; the directory (directory.peppol.eu) may lag briefly, so your organisation may be temporarily unreachable on Peppol until the new party completes the registration. See Cancel account or subscription for the full cancellation steps.

Disabling the Receiving toggle alone is not enough

Looking for unregister Peppol registration, cancel Peppol registration, or want an ERP handler (for example Exact Online or AFAS) to take over receiving? That runs via the same cancellation/migration path below -- not via individual toggles.

Using AFAS and looking to disconnect the communication profile? That only breaks the link between AFAS and the platform, comparable to withdrawing connection keys below. It is not a Peppol unregistration: your identifier remains claimed at eConnect until the cancellation/migration route has been completed.

Disabling the Receiving toggle for your organisation (Organisations > Details) only stops the delivery of new invoices on that identifier. It is not a transfer of your Peppol registration and does not free up your identifier for a different provider such as Exact Online. As long as eConnect holds the SMP registration (often including InvoiceResponse/status messages), your identifier remains claimed at eConnect -- even if both toggles (Sending and Receiving) are off. The correct route when switching providers is always the migration code via the cancellation process above, not the toggles.

Do you not have direct access to the platform because your organisation is set up via a software provider? Then you cannot reach the cancellation/migration option yourself. In that case, contact support: we take over the cancellation/migration path (written instruction, check for outstanding invoices, and migration code), so you are not dependent on self-service toggles you cannot reach.

Withdrawing connection keys only breaks the API link between the platform and your software. That is not a cancellation and not an SMP deregistration: your identifier remains claimed at eConnect, even after the keys have been withdrawn.

Only continuing to send via the Invoice Portal (for example MoneyBird)

Using the Invoice Portal to continue sending manually or via XML upload (for example with a MoneyBird connection)? Then you do not need to switch: you simply keep sending via the platform, without a cancellation or migration path. The cancellation/migration path is only needed if the accounting software itself becomes the Peppol Access Point, i.e. takes over the Service Provider role itself.

"Already registered with eConnect" message in Exact Online

Want to receive e-invoices in Exact Online and see a message along the lines of "This administration is already registered with eConnect International B.V. If you want to receive invoices in Exact Online, you must first cancel this registration and contact eConnect"? That is the same SMP claim described above: your identifier is still registered with eConnect, so Exact Online cannot take over the receiving registration.

  1. Disabling the Receiving toggle alone is not enough for this -- see above.
  2. The current Administrator of the organisation starts the cancellation or migration path (see above) or requests a migration key.
  3. Pass the migration key and your Peppol ID to Exact Online, then complete the eConnect side. This usually takes a few working days. Make sure there are no outstanding eConnect invoices before you start.
  4. If you do not have Administrator access yourself, contact support for the secure cancellation/migration form.

Are you an intermediary with only an authorisation (not the Administrator role) on the client organisations? Then you often cannot start a self-service cancellation or migration yourself for those client organisations. Want to transfer multiple client organisations or environments to another provider in bulk? Contact support for a bulk cancellation/migration process (one migration key per Peppol ID). For this, provide: for each organisation to be migrated the organisation name and Chamber of Commerce (KvK) number (and the eConnect ID if known), the name of the intermediary account/environment(s), and whether it concerns all client organisations or a selection. For large volumes, the financial clearance and generating the keys can take a few days up to around two weeks — this is indicative, not a hard SLA.

Two different processes: migration versus only stopping the authorisation. Not every bulk request from an intermediary is a migration. Does the client organisation want to stay with eConnect itself, with only the intermediary stopping its own access? Then that organisation does not belong in the migration selection. In that case, the client (or their administrator) withdraws the authorisation/partnership with the intermediary themselves via Partners — see Cancel authorisation. Withdrawing connection keys or ending an authorisation is not a substitute for an SMP migration and vice versa: only organisations actually switching to a different Service Provider belong in the migration selection.

Checking the number of keys for bulk migration: you receive one migration key per Peppol ID with an active receiving registration -- not per organisation. If an organisation has no receiving registration with eConnect, there is nothing to migrate for that organisation and you will not receive a key for it; that organisation registers for receiving directly with the new provider. The number of unique keys may therefore be lower than the number of organisations in your request. If the keys arrive in multiple emails with the same unique set, delivery is complete once all Peppol IDs to be migrated are covered.

Consequences of unregistering

It is important to understand what changes after unregistering:

ActionWhat changesDisable receivingYou no longer receive new invoices via Peppol on that identifierDisable sendingYou can no longer send invoices via that identifierDisable all identifiersYou are no longer discoverable on PeppolCancel accountYour eConnect account is terminated (existing documents remain preserved)

Existing documents in your archive are not deleted. You always retain access to previously sent and received invoices, as long as your account is active.

Frequently asked questions
What happens to my existing invoices if I unregister?

Existing documents in your archive are not deleted. You always retain access to previously sent and received invoices, as long as your eConnect account is active.

Can I disable only receiving and keep sending?

Yes. You can enable or disable receiving and sending separately per identifier. If you turn off receiving but leave sending on, you can still send invoices via Peppol.

How does it work if I want to switch to a different Service Provider?

An identifier can only be registered with one Service Provider at a time. Your Peppol participant ID can be transferred via a migration code — you do not need to re-create the ID. Two conditions apply: you authorise eConnect in writing/legally, and you have no outstanding financial obligations. You start the disconnection via the cancellation/termination form on support.econnect.eu — not via a support request. After submitting, you receive a migration code that you pass to the new provider. You remain reachable on the network during the transition.

Is disabling the Receiving toggle enough to switch to another provider?

No. The Receiving toggle only stops delivery of new invoices on that identifier; it is not a transfer of your Peppol registration. As long as eConnect holds the SMP registration, your identifier remains claimed -- even if both toggles are off. For a provider switch, always use the migration code via the cancellation process. If you do not have direct platform access because your organisation is set up via a software provider, contact support: we take over the cancellation/migration path.

What does the 'already registered with eConnect' message in Exact Online mean?

This message appears when you want to receive e-invoices in Exact Online, but your identifier is still registered with eConnect. It is the same SMP claim as with a provider switch: the current Administrator starts the cancellation or migration path, requests a migration key, and passes it to Exact Online. Without Administrator access, contact support for the secure form.

The new application or provider does not ask for a migration key -- should I choose Migrate or Stop immediately?

If the new application or Service Provider does not offer migration key intake, the Migrate option cannot be used -- there is no one to transfer the key to. In that case, choose Stop immediately during the cancellation process (My environment > Cancel account). Make sure there are no outstanding eConnect invoices and top up first in case of a negative balance. Allow for a short period of unreachability on Peppol until directory.peppol.eu is updated and the new party completes the registration.
